Tuesday, 1/7: Day 1

We are in beautiful Costa Rica!  After an 11:30 pm departure last night in -20 degree temps, we landed this afternoon in sunny San José to 80 degree weather - a 100 degree turn-around in about 15 hours.  What a welcome change!

With having no school yesterday we modified our lesson plans a bit.  We had class in the MSP airport at 3:00 am.  Then it was time to check in and get to our gate.  Our first flight went without a hitch - perfectly on time and smooth.  We had about a two-hour layover in Miami and ended up departing about 45 minutes late, but that flight was good, too.  Here's part of our group in the Miami airport:

When we arrived in San José we made it through immigration and customs pretty quickly and then met our guide, Rosío.  She seems great - friendly and very knowledgeable.  She got us to our bus and filled us in on some basics en route to our hotel.  After having some time to freshen up and get settled we walked to a nearby shopping area to exchange money and get supper.  By the time we sat down at the restaurant (Rostipollo's - one of our favorite places from our 2012 Costa Rica trip) it was 6:15 but we all agreed that it felt more like 9:00 because we were so tired.  Several of us had our first taste of Costa Rican cuisine this evening - some favorites were arroz con pollo (rice with chicken) and various fresh tropical fruit juices, including maracuyá ( passion fruit).  I tried carrot-orange juice, which was actually pretty good, although I think next time I'll stick with a more traditional tropical juice.  Some things you just have to try once! :)  The students did a great job ordering their food and speaking Spanish with our waitress.  It was a good first step towards becoming comfortable using our Spanish with native "Ticos" (Costa Ricans).

Mrs. Petty and I had planned on doing another abbreviated "class" about the family stay this evening, but we decided that everyone was so tired it would be best to do it on the bus tomorrow.  We're all pretty drained after having had almost no sleep and a big day.  Tomorrow we will head to Poás volcano and then will begin our family stay.  I'm sure it will be an exciting day!
